Maia has been working and teaching in the special education field for over 20 years. During this time she has worked with students in all disability areas. Maia started, like many, as a para in a special education classroom. For 10 years Maia worked with middle school students teaching reading, writing, and social skills classes. She also taught in a center-based DCD program for multiple years. For the past 9 years, Maia has worked as a Work-Based Learning Coordinator for high school students.

Hobbies and Interests

Maia loves being outdoors- especially with her family.  She has run 39 marathons in 12 different states. She has also run 4 ultra marathons- three 50k (31 miles) races and a 50-mile race in Door County, WI.  Some of her favorite things to do are bike and kayak with her with husband.  Maia says she needs to stay active in order to keep up with her 2 boys (14 and 11 years old). She also loves to lift weights and watch her boys do what they love (play football, basketball, baseball, tennis, golf, and swim competitively).

Maia has a passion for social justice, loves a good book, swimming in the pool in the summer, walking her 2 dogs (Sadie- a Weimaraner and Mae- a German Shorthair Pointer), and spending time with family and friends.

 

Teaching specialty

Maia has been teaching in the special education field for 19 years. During this time she has worked with students of all disability areas. For the first 10 years of her teaching career she taught reading and writing as well as center-based programs, and social skills classes for students with autism. Most recently, Maia has been teaching employability skills to high school students who receive special education services.
