Biography
Marta Shaw was born in Poland during the period of communism and trained as a philologist at one of the oldest universities in Europe, the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. After the fall of communism, she worked at one of the first private colleges in the country, and developed an interest in educational policy. After completing a program in hermeneutics at Bethel Seminary, she enrolled at the University of Minnesota and worked with top educational scholars in the field, doing research in places as far apart as Uganda and Ukraine. She then returned to Poland to work in the educational system in her home country. While most of her research so far has been in higher education, was recently involved in a national effort to reform the model for training and licensing school principals, and her newest research agenda concerns the implications of findings in neurobiology regarding the unity of the intellectual and emotional processes in the brain on the organization of education. She enjoys working with Ed.D. students at Bethel because of their passion for real-world problems, which was what got her into the field and keeps her excited about educational research.
