The Office of Diversity and Inclusion at Bethel University has arranged for a traveling exhibit to be displayed in the Brushaber Commons Atrium in honor of Native American Heritage month. The exhibit "Why Treaties Matter: Self-Government in the Dakota and Ojibwe Nations" explores the Native Nations in Minnesota and their history of treaty making with the United States government. The exhibit opened November 6 and will be on display through November 16.
“This exhibit is all about educating and helping you to understand the 11 tribal nations in Minnesota,” said Annamarie Hill, executive director of Minnesota Indian Affairs Council, during the exhibit opening at Bethel. “One thing we can do is learn; we can have knowledge.”
According to a Visitor’s Guide for the exhibit, a partnership between the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council, the Minnesota Humanities Center, and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C., led to the creation of this traveling exhibit. The exhibit consists of 20 free standing banners with evocative text, historical and contemporary photographs, and maps. For more information about this exhibit, visit www.mnhum.org/treaties.
