Bethel Theatre Presents “110º in the Shade”

Eight performances of “110º in the Shade” begin July 14 and feature a seasoned cast of actors.

Bethel Theatre presents 110° in the Shade as this year’s summer musical. The musical is based on the play The Rainmaker, a romantic comedy written by N. Richard Nash. The musical is directed by Associate Professor Meg Zauner.

110° in the Shade tells the story of a town experiencing physical drought on their farmland and spiritual and emotional droughts in their personal lives. A charismatic fellow named Starbuck arrives to town, claiming an ability to bring rain for a fee. Starbuck’s presence causes division among them, bringing out each of their insecurities and doubts. In the end, each person reaches a turning-point of hope through faith.

This musical will resonate with anyone who has gone through a dry season of life. “For many in this story, the drought has challenged their ability to hope and their faith has diminished,” explains Zauner. “But the Rainmaker arrives, who, surprisingly understands the need to hold onto faith.” According to Zauner, the story reminds the audience of the message of Hebrews 11:1, “Now faith is the assurance of what we hope for and the certainty of what we do not see.” Trusting in love of God, family, and friends in the midst of the droughts in our lives can be challenging, but it is the only real way to weather the hard times, Zauner adds.

The seasoned cast features six Bethel alumni, familiar with the Bethel theatre stage: Kelly Anderson ’16 as Lizzie, Emily Holasek ’12 as Sammie Sue, Emma Johnson ’16 as Snookie, Jamie Krause ’16 as Starbuck, Nathaniel Norton ’08 as Jimmy, and Lowell Rice ’15 as Noah. Jeff Berryhill, an adjunct professor in Bethel’s graduate counseling psychology program, plays the role of HC. Jason Millsap, a Minneapolis actor and Drake University theatre arts graduate, plays the role of File.

110° in the Shade opens on July 14 and runs through July 24. Tickets and more information are available through the Box Office online or over the phone.
