Royal football players do a lot more than win games. A core goal of the program is to recruit and develop young men who give their all to their teammates—but also to their families, churches, and communities.

That’s being noticed on a national level.

This week, offensive lineman and biokinetics major Danny Munoz ’20 became the seventh consecutive Royal, and the 13th in program history, to be named to the 2019 Allstate American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team. Bethel now holds the fourth-highest number of titles in any division and is tied for the most among schools outside of Division I.

Munoz’s commitment to serving his community dates back to his time at Monticello High School. During his time at Bethel, he’s been a part of the "Bethel Buddies" program, which brings local elementary students to Bethel as an after-school option. The students are partnered with Bethel students who spend time developing relationships with them, helping with homework, and eating dinner with them in the Dining Center. During spring break 2018, Munoz went on a mission trip to Costa Rica to serve impoverished areas of the country.

During the off season, Munoz has been a leader in rounding up fellow Bethel football teammates to serve at Feed My Starving Children on Saturday mornings. This past spring, Munoz was a volunteer with "Night to Shine Prom" at Westbridge Community Church in St. Michael, Minnesota. Munoz accompanied a guest with special needs through their prom experience. The "Night to Shine" program is sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation.

"I've had the privilege of not only being a member of the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, but also witnessing firsthand how these young men are able to inspire and ultimately change the lives of those around them. Each year, I'm impressed by the way that Allstate and the AFCA share the important stories of these players' 'good works,' and I'm honored to be part of such a special program that has become a source of inspiration in the college football community."

— Tim Tebow, voting panel member, Heisman Trophy winner, and two-time National Football League (NFL) champion

Munoz was chosen by a panel of judges from among 137 nominees, and the award recognizes the impact players make off the field and their dedication to community service. To be considered for a spot on the team, each player must be actively involved with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining a strong academic standing.

The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team will be invited to the 2020 Allstate Sugar Bowl and will join Tebow and Allstate volunteers to give back to the host city of New Orleans through a special community service project. Allstate will recognize the team during the halftime show on January 1, 2020.

The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team was selected by an esteemed voting panel, which includes Tebow, ESPN College GameDay Analyst Kirk Herbstreit, Allstate Western Territory President John O'Donnell, along with: Zaid Abdul-Aleem (Duke, 1994 team), Matt Stinchcomb (Georgia, 1997, 1998 teams), Brian Brenberg (St. Thomas, 2001 team), Mike Proman (Amherst, 2002 team), Wes Counts (Middle Tennessee State, 1999 team); media members Blair Kerkhoff (Kansas City Star) and Paul Myerberg (USA TODAY); Frank Solich, 2019 AFCA president and head coach at Ohio University; and Joe Taylor, 2001 AFCA president and athletic director at Virginia Union University.

"This is the 12th year that Allstate has partnered with the AFCA to help honor deserving football student-athletes on the Good Works Team," AFCA Executive Director Todd Berry says. "This award embodies what is great about the human spirit, football student-athletes and coaches from all parts of the country dedicated to one thing, giving of their time and energy to make a difference in their communities."

Each year the team is made up of 11 players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and 11 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), Divisions II, III, and the NAIA as well as one honorary head coach. Clemson's Dabo Swinney is the honorary head coach of the 27th annual roster in 2019.
