Iowa and Minnesota Campus Compact recently announced recipients of the 2020 Presidents’ Engaged Campus Awards. Every year, awardees are selected by each school’s president based on their demonstration of student leadership, civic engagement, or community partnership. The following winners were selected by President Jay Barnes:

Youth empowerment organization Irreducible Grace Foundation was selected for the Community Partner Award, recognizing how—by teaming with Bethel social work majors—they’ve developed both enriched educational opportunities and community growth, promoting trust and healing among youth.

Professor Leo Gabriel was given the Civic Engagement Leadership Award. As a professor of business and economics, Gabriel has organized students to provide over 4,000 hours of free tax preparation, benefitting both the students through the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and their clients through the results of the work.

Social work major Gracie Grussing ’22 received the Student Leadership Award in recognition of her commitment to civic engagement and community collaboration. Grussing participates in the Frogtown Urban Living Experience where she receives mentorship from community leaders and works toward community growth and peace.

“It's very humbling to win this award,” says Grussing. “I'm super grateful for the Bethel Frogtown Summit-University partnership and the authentic relationships that have been formed.”

Although award recipients cannot be celebrated in-person, each awardee has been given a virtual thank-you card where community members can express their gratitude and congratulations.
