MPCC's 2020 Scholars at the Capitol

On March 11, 2020, four Bethel students spent a day presenting at the Minnesota State Capitol. Students from all over the state, representing undergraduate research at Minnesota private colleges, shared their research on topics spanning from cancer biology to creative writing. Scholars at the Capitol is an annual showcase which provides undergraduate students the opportunity to research and explore projects they may pursue later in their career.

Anna Swensen ’20, presented on The Value of Traditional Medicine in Latin America. As a biology and Spanish major, Swensen wanted to study a topic that combined her interest in medicine and her interest in Latin American culture. “I looked at the importance of traditional medicine in various Latin American countries and how integrating these practices with modern medicine can promote better health of the people as well as preserve cultural practices,” she says.

Liz Olson ’21, Austin Kelly ’21 and Willy Issa ’21 also participated in the day. Their project represented Bethel’s Human Kinetics and Applied Science program and was titled Utilizing Patient Centered Care to Reverse Insulin Resistance and Diabetes. 

Each presentation was placed in the Capitol’s rotunda where people could walk around while viewing and learning about each presentation.

“The most meaningful idea I took away is the importance of recognizing and celebrating other cultures,” Swensen says. “As I prepare for a future as a physician, this research has reminded me that there is more than one way to practice great medicine and I hope to recognize, respect and embrace the various cultures of my future patients.”
