Bethel Welcomes New Faculty to the College of Arts & Sciences

Bethel University’s College of Arts & Sciences welcomes five new full-time professors to its faculty this fall. 

Rachel Anderson, assistant professor of psychology

Anderson graduated from Hamline University with her bachelor’s degree in psychology before continuing her education at the University of Iowa, where she received her Ph.D. She recently completed a postdoctoral fellow position at the University of Minnesota in the Department of Neuroscience and was a visiting instructor at St. Olaf College in spring 2018. During her doctoral work, Anderson received the Spence-Lewis Award, which recognizes outstanding graduate students at the University of Iowa who have established an exceptional record of research and promise for success in their field.

Kelsey Curtis ’08, assistant professor of nursing

Curtis received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Bethel and her master’s degree in nursing from Walden University in Minnesota. She has additional training in critical care orientation through the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale, Minnesota. Curtis has experience as a staff nurse and most recently worked as an administrative manager and nursing supervisor, all at North Memorial Health Hospital. 

Merrin Guice Gill, associate professor of music, director of choral activities

Guice Gill earned her bachelor’s degree in music from Spellman College in Georgia, her master’s in choral conducting from Rutgers University in New Jersey, and her doctorate in musical arts from the University of Wisconsin. Before coming to Bethel, Guice Gill worked as an associate professor of music at Buena Vista University in Iowa, and as assistant professor of music at Miami University in Ohio. Guice Gill has years of choral conducting experience and was a semi-finalist for The American Prize in choral performance in 2017.

Matthew Kuchem, assistant professor of political science

Kuchem graduated with his bachelor’s degree from Union University in Tennessee and then continued his education at Indiana University where he received a master’s and doctorate in political science. He has taught political science at Indiana University as a visiting assistant professor and at DePauw University, also in Indiana, as a part-time assistant professor.

Hannah Schendel, instructor of music

Schendel leads the Bethel University Orchestra and also serves as the director of string activities. She received her bachelor’s degree in music from the University of Minnesota, School of Music. She then went on to receive a master’s in orchestral conducting from the University of South Carolina. She has worked as a conductor in the area for about five years and has been a guest conductor across Minnesota, including with the symphony orchestras in Minnetonka and Bemidji.
