Hands-on learning is at the core of all our majors.

In any major or minor in the art and design department, you’ll have numerous opportunities to apply what you’re learning, conduct research, and gain experience. It’s all part of how we equip you with skills that transfer to any career.

And you’ll be able to get involved right away. Bethel’s size and vibrant community present opportunities for you to get involved from your first day on campus.  

Study abroad

Explore the world and expand your creative horizons through our study abroad programs. You can participate in international projects like Textura, which involves storytelling in countries such as Kenya, Guatemala, Taiwan, India, and more. Additionally, you can choose to study at renowned institutions across the U.S. 

Internships

Explore numerous internships and professional opportunities both on and off campus. From securing internships at museums, and media houses, to renowned organizations, you’ll gain the practical skills and professional connections that set you apart in the competitive art and design industry. Art Therapy students can also explore internships in clinical settings, hospitals, elder care and hospice, schools, and Art students in studio artists, galleries and museums, and community art centers.

Display your work and earn recognition

You can showcase your talent and creativity through various exhibitions, competitions, and awards. Awards, grants, and scholarships are also available to highlight and support your artistic endeavors. 

  • Raspberry Monday. This annual spring Department of Art and Design shows provides opportunities for students to showcase their and receive recognition.
  • Bethel art galleries. On-campus and traveling art galleries offer you the chance to gain experience and showcase your work. Senior capstone work is commonly displayed in our galleries. Learn more about Bethel's art galleries and see what's currently on display.

Access to well-equipped studio space

You’ll have access to the department’s multiple studios for art and design students. Beyond that, during your senior year as an art or design major, you will be given your own studio space, preparing you even further for your creative practice outside the classroom.

Student clubs

Join Bethel's Art and Design Club, or explore other clubs and organizations that match your interests.

On-campus work

Work closely with faculty and gain valuable experience on campus such as teaching assistantships in galleries and studios. These positions provide mentorship, teaching experience, and opportunities to contribute to the vibrant artistic community at Bethel. 

Research

Explore your interests and contribute to the field through research programs such as Edgren Scholars and summer research projects. Conduct your own original research, collaborate with faculty members, and contribute to academic scholarship in art and design.
