As a Bethel biological sciences student, you'll have opportunities to receive funding for research from your first day on campus.

These scholarship and assistant programs provide opportunities to pursue your interest in research while helping you gain experience working on independent research projects.

Research scholarship program

The research scholarship program is funded through scholarships given in honor of two longtime Bethel biology faculty members. Read more about these scholarships.

Research scholarships are typically designed for students who are juniors or seniors, and who have completed BIO/ENS399 Intro to Research. These scholarships are awarded annually to students in the biological sciences to support summer research activities.

The goals of the research scholarship program are to:

  • Encourage students to pursue independent research projects with a faculty mentor, potentially leading to research opportunities beyond their undergraduate years.
  • Provide funding for undergraduate students to explore significant research questions and help prepare them for graduate-level training. Awards are made annually based on proposals submitted to the Department of Biological Sciences.

C. Weldon Jones Research Scholarship Award

This award is in memory of Dr. C. Weldon Jones, a longtime department member who passed away suddenly in 2003 and was widely recognized for his excellence in teaching and collaborative research with students.

Gregg Johnson Research Scholarship Award

This award is in recognition of Dr. Gregg A. Johnson, who taught in the biology department for 38 years. Beginning in 1975, Gregg shaped and inspired students at Bethel through his excellent teaching and diverse scholarship interests.
