Hands-on learning is at the core of all our majors.

In any major or minor in the Speech and Language Pathology program at Bethel, you’ll have numerous opportunities to apply what you’re learning, conduct research, and gain experience. It’s all part of how we equip you with skills that transfer to any career.

Clinical practicum and observation hours

Students gain hands-on experience through supervised clinical practicum placements, allowing them to work directly with individuals experiencing speech, language, cognition, and swallowing disorders. These placements are available in schools, hospitals, private clinics, and Bethel’s own SLP community clinic. The clinic provides services such as speech and respiratory training, cognitive stimulation therapy, and hearing screenings for the Bethel community.

Internships and professional experience

Students can engage in internships at various healthcare facilities, rehabilitation centers, and educational institutions. These experiences provide practical exposure to assessment techniques, treatment planning, and interdisciplinary collaboration within the field of speech-language pathology.

Research and evidence-based practice

The program emphasizes evidence-informed practice through research opportunities, including participation in faculty-led projects and independent research initiatives. Students can contribute to advancing the field by engaging in studies related to language development, voice disorders, neurogenic communication disorders, and more.

Interdisciplinary learning and electives

The SLP major includes elective courses from disciplines such as psychology, biology, special education, and healthcare, providing a well-rounded education that enhances students’ ability to understand diverse populations. These courses cultivate critical thinking, cultural responsiveness, and effective communication skills, all essential for a successful career in speech-language pathology.

Study abroad opportunities

Students have the option to participate in international programs that provide global perspectives on communication disorders and rehabilitation services. These experiences broaden cultural understanding and enhance professional competencies in diverse settings.
