Learning Opportunities

Hands-on learning is at the core of all our majors.

In any major or minor in the math and computer science department, you’ll have numerous opportunities to apply what you’re learning, conduct research, and gain experience. It’s all part of how we equip you with skills that transfer to any career.

And you’ll be able to get involved right away. Bethel’s size and vibrant community present opportunities for you to get involved from your first day on campus. 

Internships

Gain practical experience through on and off-campus internships. You’ll have the chance to intern at local insurance companies, actuarial firms, and medical technology companies across the Twin Cities and region.

Research

You'll have the chance to collaborate with faculty on funded research projects in growing fields like actuarial science, operations research, differential equations, high-performance computing, and computability and complexity. Some classes include a semester-long design project for a real-world client, completed alongside students from different engineering disciplines.

Experiential learning

Get out of the classroom to serve as a peer tutor, student grader, teaching assistant (TA)_or student worker in Bethel’s Office of Information Technology. You can also participate in Bethel-sponsored service-learning programs, including tutoring K-12 students.

Competitions

Be part of teams collaborating to compete in the international Contest in Mathematical Modeling (COMAP MCM). Bethel teams have ranked in the top 10 with a ranking of “Outstanding Winner” several times. 

Study abroad

Study around the world and learn from different cultures through trips over a full semester, January session, spring break, and summer.

Student clubs

Join student organizations like Sigma Zeta and Bethel’s student chapter of the Mathematics Association of America (MAA), the Mathematical Contest in Modeling (COMAP), and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).
