Amount

$4,000 per year.

Renewal

The Holman Scholarship is renewable and students may receive it for up to four years. To be eligible for renewal, students must: remain a chemistry and/or biochemistry major, maintain at least a 3.0 GPA, and make satisfactory progress towards a degree as determined by the chemistry department.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must have declared either a chemistry or biochemistry major.
  • Must be an incoming first-year student of Bethel University (freshman or transfer).
  • Consistent with the wishes of the donors, highest priority will be given to applicants who demonstrate financial need, according to the results of the FAFSA.

Academic requirements

  • Recipients must be enrolled at least half-time in courses required for graduation, be in good standing, and be working toward their first bachelor's degree. Scholarships will be prorated for less than full-time attendance.
  • Recipients must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 at Bethel for renewal, and meet specific requirements of the Department of Chemistry.

Deadline

For optimal consideration, please submit all application materials by March 1. Applications may be submitted at any time, but the review of applications will begin in March.

How to apply

The application requires the following information:

  • Academic information: Including standardized test scores, GPA, and lists of math and science courses taken
  • Short essay: Write a short essay (about 500 words) on why you want to major in chemistry or biochemistry and what your educational and career goals are. (It's advised to copy-and-paste your essay into the application from a word processing program.
  • Recommendation letter: The letter of recommendation should be from a teacher or other individual able to comment on your academic performance (strengths/weaknesses), potential as a chemistry/biochemistry major, and other factors distinguishing you from other applicants
  • Via email: This letter should be e-mailed to Rollin King, professor of chemistry, rking@bethel.edu
  • Via standard mail: The letter must be sent in a sealed and signed envelope to:
